World's Largest Beer Garden Expansion

I'm not the biggest fan of this one...

But I figured this would happen at the "World's Largest Beer Garden". Yes that's the Wrigley Field Bleachers, people...The Chicago City Planning Office struck a deal with the Chicago Cubs for their bleacher expansion yesterday. Check out the terms of the deal here from from the Chicago Tribune.com.

This is the same plan that the Cubs and the city couldn't agree on in February. Now, with little changes, the city gets 3.1 Million, $250K is donated to a public school, and $400K gets earmarked for a new traffic signal system. In return, the residents get a giant canope hovering over the West side of Waverland and Sheffield Avenues, another private parking structure, and improvements to a public school that should have been provided from private funding in the first place. At least, residents don't get stuck for the $400K traffic control system that they're installing in the intersection in front of Wrigley Field. I'm not so sure that the area made out so well in this one...Meanwhile the theme park party gets to expand for the Tribune Company.

The Chicago Landmarks Commission still has a chance to hear this one out. Yet, the way that the organization has lost so many cases downtown over the past several years, I'm not placing a lot of hope on their chances to affect a decision. It's just a shame that the famous red-brick facades are going to be now only seen by hammered post-college kids from Schaumberg and Mundelein, who are going to use the bricks to hold themselves up after ballgames...And don't tell me the new planned brick facades bordering the street will be the same...They're not.

The Cubs are going to say that they need to pay-off escalating salaries. But don't buy it...Try scalping a ticket to see where the market value is for their own brokerage services that are pushing second-hand tickets on the street. Between splitting television rights between Fox and WGN, sold-out seats throughout the years, merchandising, radio and online deals, concessions, parking, and corporate ticket sales, the Tribune Company is killing it, and believe me...They have more than enough dollars in their coiffers to put a winner on the field for the past two decades...It's only now that their dumb ass accountants finally figured out that post-season play in sports is profitable.

What you're seeing is the manipulation of planning commissions from sports organizations. It hurts when you see that historic landmarks are destroyed, but the theme park of Wrigleyville moves on...When will Mickey and Minnie move into the neighborhood?

Does this mean the windscreens blocking sight views in right field will be down permanently?
