Phil to State?
Everyone in Raleighwood and across the mill towns and farms of North Carolina are up in arms over the possibility of Phil Ford as coach of the Wolfpack today...
Well, Phil to NC State?...When you think about it, that's not a bad move on either part.
State has to save face by getting a 'name' guy. They also have to get a guy who can recruit against Wake, Duke, and UNC. That's a tough task to answer for a middleweight coach or a coach who doesn't have ACC or East Coast roots.
What State fans have to realize that NC State is experiencing what the University of South Carolina has experienced in college football. They have the squeeze from so many other players in the market that it's hard to compete for recruits and wins.
From the start, Wolfpack fans should realize that State is the fourth option right now behind the Big Three of Wake, Duke and UNC. How can they push that envelope? Pull big-name recruits...That's where Phil Ford could help...Big-Time.
Now, what would be really wild is to see how many 'Carolina' brethren join him on his staff. I think that would be the most intriguing part of the move.
**A lot of UNC people have their fond memories of Phil, and Tar Heel fans talk a big game about Carolina family...Yet, if he starts winning games and in-state recruiting battles, you have to wonder if that move could be the zygote of college basketball's rivalry of the 21st century.
If Coach Ford were to also win and recruit at a more than adequate level, you also have to wonder how much love would bestowed upon Coach Ford from Raleigh and hither towns.
For Tar Heel fans, who state their undying love, let's see how after a couple of recruiting losses, a tight loss, and listening to Wolfpack fans, how much love there really is for #12 and a "Carolina" staff...
**People are always on the UNC/Duke rivalry tip. Yet, I've always thought about how white collar and mediafied the "Duke/UNC" love/hate truly is. Go deep into the mill towns, the public schools, and the pickle and tobacco farms in NC, nothing is as big as UNC/State hate...Nothing.
Remember...They gutted Ramses...That's raw dog, son.
With all of that aside, I'm glad to see Steve Lavin out of the mix. He is undoubtedly the biggest farce that I ever saw as a coach at the elite level. The guy used all of his nine coaching lives while at UCLA, and I still can't believe he lasted as long as he did. In terms of class and skill, he set UCLA back to Walt Hazzard level. Lavin would get destroyed in the ACC.
First off, there is NO way NO how can he out coach any of the guys in this league. Second, I really wonder how he would recruit at the level they need to be at without East Coast ties. That would be a major stretch.
They may end up with Derek Whittenburg, who would be great for quotes at least. One thing is that he'll recruit NYC and the inner city to State...That's what they need and love. Yet, I see them with an ugly mercy break-up in the end.
I know that pro transitions don't prove well, but why haven't they gone after Sidney Lowe? (Note: I guess the fact that he doesn't have a diploma is what ends that question.)
My two cents is to go after Sean Miller at Xavier. But my two cents should roll into the drain because he probably too 'green' to handle State right now.
The Brickyard is getting chillier...
**Also, kudos to Matt Doherty for landing the job at SMU. He's back on the climb. If he's there for more than two seasons, I'll be shocked. That's my two cents.
